Dave Buchanan
Consultant Orthotist
Dave consults internationally helping develop policy-based decision-making algorithms and troubleshooting documentation for complex case management around the world. He has been, at least partially, responsible for the design of some of the orthotic systems the orthotic profession uses around the world and has worked, and lived, around the Globe working for the biggest manufacturers in prosthetics and orthotics.
His specialisation and expertise are in Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses and joint systems, although he has also presented internationally on Osteoarthritis and Ankle-Foot-Orthoses. He has co-authored in papers on topics such as AFO nomenclature and prioritisation of research into amputation, whilst also occasionally proof reading for Prosthetics and Orthotics International journal and as editor for The Foot in Diabetes.
He has the immense honour of being the first, and only practicing orthotist in the world to be admitted to the register of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow as a Fellow of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine.
He started his professional life as a civilian aircraft engineer with the MOD. At that time, he was a Party Leader in the RAF Mountain Rescue Service and loved nothing more than running or walking in the mountains and climbing. But, after a long period of illness, he changed his outlook on life and trained to be a Prosthetist and Orthotist so that he could help others as he, too, had been helped.
Sport has always been important to Dave. In another, thinner, life he climbed with some of the world’s hardest climbers, flew paragliders competitively and set british and world records in ultra-endurance mountain biking.
He also has an Olympic Torch from 2012 in his office.
