Emily Spence

Clinical Specialist Orthotist

Having graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Prosthetics and Orthotics from The University of Strathclyde in 2013, Emily has gone on to become a highly experienced and well-respected orthotist within London and the South-East.

Emily started her career working within the NHS at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge before moving to London to work at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton and St George’s University Hospital as a Senior Orthotist and then laterally as the Assistant Clinical Lead Orthotist for the service.

More recently, Emily took up a post within Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust working alongside Chris Cody.

Emily has over ten years’ experience working within a variety of orthotics clinics and multidisciplinary clinics. She has taken a particular interest in the orthotic management of the diabetic foot and is an integral member of the innovative and reputable Diabetic Foot Clinic at King’s College Hospital, London. Emily is heavily engaged in education and in late 2024 co-presented alongside a panel of international experts in diabetic foot management in a conference titled: Diabetic Foot Offloading – New Approach Based on European Experience and seeking to educate the audience on the biomechanical principles underlying the most appropriate orthotic prescriptions in the management of the diabetic foot.

Emily has also taken on a complex clinic for individuals with weakness as a result of post poliomyelitis syndrome, formulating and designing high-end and innovative orthotic prescriptions and delivering exceptional patient outcomes.

Emily is passionate and determined when it comes to design and development within orthotics and will work closely with her patients to understand their goals and needs. As a result, Emily has been shortlisted for Guys and St Thomas’ Orthotist/Prosthetist of the year award for 2024.

Outside of her orthotics career, Emily continues to work on her professional development and recently completed a leadership and management apprenticeship, passing with distinction.

Mr Gallogly was an incredibly friendly and approachable consultant from the first appointment. He explained any treatment he proposed clearly and always put my mind at rest. I consulted Nick Gallogly for my painful feet and walking difficulty. Nick did a full assessment of my feet and gait and explained the cause of my walking pain and suggested a treatment plan. His treatment resulted in a marked improvement in my condition, with reduced pain and improved mobility. Nick’s friendly manner and professional authority were very reassuring and I would recommend his services to anyone with foot problems.

I cannot recommend Mr Gallogly highly enough. Following various sports injuries and problems with her knees and ankles, and consultations with a variety of consultants, my teenage daughter was able to return to playing top level sport thanks to Nick Gallogly. His approach is very hands on and practical, and his manner is so likeable and cheerful, that he immediately put my daughter at ease and we both have utter faith in him. My daughter now wears customised Orthotics, personally overseen by Nick, which have enabled her to return to sport pain-free. Seeing Nick Gallogly completely turned things around for us.

I am a former client of Dave Buchanan and met him through the Spinal Injury Community. I was chatting to my former pyhsio roughly 7yrs ago about purchasing some Calipers as I am a wheelchair user and Paralyzed from the waist down. We started with a face to face meeting where Dave clearly explained the process in designing my bespoke Calipers to enable me to walk small distances and make regular sit to stands easier.  I then visited Dave for the moulding for my legs and feet. Once the moulding had been casted and Dave was happy I returned a few months later for the fitting. The Calipers fitted perfectly and since they have made it possible for me to walk around my house and other places and also helped with my leg and body conditioning. I walked 100m (in the calipers) as part of my own personal triathlon in raising money for a charity.  Dave has always been available in giving me any advice or support when needed. He was always incredibly professional, efficient and most importantly easy to work alongside.
